Yummy Delights

Well Kept Secret

Some of the best home cooked meals can be found in your local gas station. This is a well kept secret by some to ensure when they go for lunch or dinner that there will be some for them.

We discovered an awesome food source at our local Citgo Station also known as Choice Food Store. This station is American owned, family operated, and one of the cleanest little stations around. The store sells some of the best fried chicken I have ever tasted. When we first visited the store the first thing that impressed me was that it was family owned and American owned. But most importantly it did not smell like curry.

The Choice food Store located in St. Petersburg Florida at 2801 22ND Ave North, has many specialty dishes. My favorite being Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, you receive a more than generous serving for only $3.99. Another awesome dish is their Prospector Stew made with kielbasa sausage, you just can't get enough of it. Fried Chicken and collard greens served with cornbread "yummy".

Breakfast you would not believe, my husband stops every morning for $2.00 scrambled eggs, grits or hash browns, bacon, sausage, or chicken and toast. You can't buy it and make it at home that cheap.

Oh! If your a Cuban sandwich lover you have to try theirs, the best I have ever had and at a great price of $3.99.

I think if food critics visited these type of stations this well kept secret of some of the best home-cooked meals around would be out of the bag.

The family that owns the place everyone works there. Mom is the boss and the cook, all the kids are cashiers/sales associates and Dad is the maintenance man/stocker. Even all the customers call mom "MOM".  If this store was not located where it is I would swear It was a small home town dinner.

Do yourself a favor If your ever in the Saint Petersburg area and have the opportunity you have got to visit this little store and try the food. In the mean time don't be scared to stop at your little mom and pop stores and check out the fresh food. Hint if the store and bathrooms look clean you can feel safe the food is good to eat.

Interesting, while driving to Sedona allot of the gas stations are truck stops too. And they have very good food for the truckers. Thanks K.

Ever seen that show, shoot I can't remember the name, about dives and finding really good food in the most off the wall places. This place should be on that show.

A good find is always worth passing on! Who woulda thought you could get good food at a gas station. I will have to be more adventurous on future road trips :) The in-laws live in FLA. Maybe I'll get a chance to check it out next time we visit.

Should pass this info along to that Food Network show - Diners, Drive-ins and Dives :D
